A favicon is the small icon browsers show on a website's tab, bookmark and home-screen shortcut; a favicon generator turns one image into the set of sizes browsers and devices expect. FreeToolsKit's generator crops your image to a square, renders six PNG sizes from 16 × 16 to 512 × 512, and gives you the HTML snippet to paste into your page. Your image never leaves your device — everything runs in your browser.
How do you make a favicon?
- Drag and drop an image onto the panel, or click to browse — one image, up to 50 MB.
- Check the source size shown under the preview; images smaller than 512 × 512 px upscale the largest icons.
- Choose Transparent or White for the background of areas your image leaves see-through.
- Wait a moment while the six sizes render — each row shows its dimensions and file size.
- Download the icons you need one at a time, or press “Download all (ZIP)” for the full set plus the snippet file.
- Copy the HTML snippet and paste it into the head of your page, with the icon files beside it.
What is the Favicon Generator used for?
- Adding a tab icon to a new website before launch.
- Making an Apple touch icon so a site looks right when saved to an iPhone home screen.
- Creating the 192 and 512 px icons a progressive web app install prompt needs.
- Turning a logo into matching tab, bookmark and shortcut icons in one pass.
- Replacing a blurry old favicon with a crisp set made from the original logo file.
Frequently asked questions
Is the favicon generator free?
Yes — free, with no sign-up. You can generate one favicon set at a time from a single image and download the icons and the HTML snippet without charge.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. Your image is drawn on canvases inside your browser, on your own device. It is never uploaded, stored or seen by anyone, and the tool keeps working after the page loads even if you go offline.
What sizes does the favicon generator make?
Six PNG sizes: 16 × 16 and 32 × 32 for browser tabs, 48 × 48 for shortcuts, 180 × 180 as the Apple touch icon, and 192 × 192 and 512 × 512 for Android home screens and progressive web apps. Sizes larger than your image are upscaled and may look soft.
Does it make a .ico file?
No. Modern browsers and devices accept PNG favicons, so the tool generates PNG files only, with the matching HTML snippet. A .ico file is only needed for very old browsers.
What happens if my image is not square?
The image is cropped to a square from the centre before any icon is rendered, so the icon never looks stretched. If the important part of your logo sits at an edge, crop it square first.
